Total Vibration

Hi. I'm Lars Gotrich. I do a lot of things for NPR Music. I enjoy metal, fun-killer noise, effusively joyful pop music and beer. Sometimes I make mixtapes as DJ Gold Locks.

Woke up with this song in my head this morning. “A Mind of Her Own” was, at the time, Pedro the Lion’s most aggressive track. Given that David Bazan had kept to a monotonal brood until this song, there’s an unsettling and murderous passion to his vocals, which hits a fever pitch at this chilling conclusion: “Hey, where do you think you’re going? / Don’t you walk away from me / You put down that telephone / You’re not calling anyone.”

In thinking about Nevermind’s 20th anniversary this week for NPR Music, I spoke with David Bazan, Thou and Damien Jurado, three artists who covered my favorite Nirvana song, “Something in the Way.” You can hear the covers and read the interviews in a series I called About A Song.
