Faustian Echoes is kind of a perfect introduction to what Agalloch is about, musically: Dramatic flourishes that cascade down from John Haughm’s gurgling growl to Aesop Dekker’s melodic drumming, an impressive attention to songwriting dynamics, and a screech-owl atmosphere set on fire. And while the nods to Agalloch’s acoustic roots weave throughout, I’m feelin’ the melodic (and unexpected) chugga-chugga moments, the stirring E-bow section, and geeking out on the eerie, King Crimson-y Mellotron around 18 minutes in. Needless to say, I am glad there is a 21-minute, single-track EP based on Geothe’s Faust by Agalloch in my life.
