A List Of 2011 Year-End Metal Lists
Man, 2011, what a ride. Let’s open up another case of cheap-ass beer and pour one out for ol’ two’leven, amiright? Oh, hold on, 2011 wants to say something. He looks a little pukey, though. “Damn you all to hell. [Dry-heaves.] 2012 already done told me that Varg’s gonna re-constitute some moar old Burzum songs like George Lucas on weekend bender with Jar Jar...

Hands down, “Electric Sodom” by Densetu Stream will be the weirdest and most intriguing thing you’ll hear all day. Bandcamp tags it “russian federation” and “illinois,” so your guess is as good as mine as to where Densetu Stream is actually from, but this is some spaced-out dub/reggae with blackened reptilian croaks, like Immortal’s Abbath smoking a...

Lifetime, please let Linda and Rhonda be a real fake TV show.
fielded:
Meet Linda and Rhonda. This is what we do with family on Christmas when there is wine and wine and Bailey’s and wine. These saucy middle-aged mamas bring you fashion tips, psychic predictions and lots of blah-blah’s. Special thanks to the wonderful women of our family who helped make this year’s episode extra glamorous.

25 Albums, Bands, Exhibits, And Other Such...
I feel like I experienced music differently in 2011. When music journalism is your 9-to-5 job, there has to be balance: What is for work and what is for myself? I still haven’t quite figured that distinction out, yet (and it’s been 13 years since I started writing about music), but what the following 25 albums, songs, bands, exhibits and more abstract music experiences (movie...

If this video teaser is any indication, the forthcoming record by doomed black metal band Velnias is gonna sound MASSIVE… and maybe a little like Neurosis?

The Innocence Mission just released a free Christmas EP and your holidays are suddenly a little brighter or weepier depending how Karen Peris’ angelic voice strikes you at any given moment.

The Out Door: The Out Door's Favorite Solo Guitar... →
the-out-door:
In the two years we’ve been doing The Out Door, we’ve talked to, and about, a lot of solo guitar players. The ’90s resurgence of one of the most influential solo players ever, John Fahey, is still having a ripple effect— in fact, you could argue the effect is as great as it’s ever been, with…

No Refunds: 10 Warped Records From 2011 I Bought...
Look, I’m really happy about the vinyl resurgence of the last five years, too, but some pressing plants and record labels are starting to take premature victory laps. Are they even listening back to the test pressings? I realize this is, like, #firstworldproblems 101, but here are 10 new records I bought in 2011 with my own damned money that were warped, skipped and otherwise...

At NPR, even our taste in metal is progressive.
– Henry Owings has been skewering every major media outlet’s year-end lists all week at Chunklet, and NPR certainly was not safe. Love you, dude.

Oh, joy! Mick Barr (Krallice) just uploaded a bunch of Ocrilim releases to Bandcamp. There are a couple on there that I haven’t heard, but I highly recommend starting with Annothrith Hymns, probably his most thoughtful and, yes, hymn-like solo shred album.

If you ever wished Richard Skelton would record a Christmas song, then I highly recommend this folkloric ambient version of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” by The Frozen Vaults. I absolutely adore it. This winter compilation from Hibernate and Home Normal is actually all really great for the weepy snowdrifters among us.

Aspidistrafly “Landscape with a Fairy”: I have a soft spot for achingly gorgeous chamber folk/pop, but add in some subtle drone and a whispy female vocalist and I’m yours.
